WAS £5. Karkadé, regarded as the 'drink of the Pharaoh's' was coveted in ancient Egypt.
Today in modern Egyptian culture it is revered for it's all natural ruby colour, tart flavour and abundance of health giving vitamins, minerals & anti-oxidants. Very high in vitamin C, boosts immune system, lowers blood pressure and much more. And the taste.. after trying it, it's clear why it's loved so much!
To prepare a delicious true hot karkadé: Place a few hibiscus sepals into a heat proof glass and pour on freshly boiled water. For an authentic experience add two sugar cubes (optional) and allow to brew for around 3 minutes. Stir and be 2 minutes more, stir, offer to guests, sip and enjoy! This is an everyday brew technique.
For ceremonial and celebration serving double the sepals bringing to the boil in a large pot of water, remove from the heat and steep overnight, gently warm through before serving.
Alternatively, brew using either technique above, allow to cool then chill down with lots of ice. Super refreshing in summer!
In winter make a delicious alternative to mulled wine by brewing with celebration method and adding warming spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise and an orange slice just before serving. So cosy and a real healthy treat!
This is a powerful tea. If you are taking medication consult your GP before changing your diet.
